XING INVENTORY

In 2015, XING (Re)Connecting Landscapes began the development of a National Wildlife Crossing Infrastructure database.

The database will serve to advance knowledge of animal-crossing infrastructure on two fronts; a publicly accessible and interactive tool that will allow the general public to digitally explore crossing sites across Canada; and a complete dataset that will allow practitioners, academics, and policy-makers to access current and relevant data to assist with research, policy-making, and design of future animal-crossing projects.

This database is needed understand the Canada-relevant standards for best- and next-practices in the design and planning of effective and feasible wildlife crossing infrastructure. In absence of clear nation-wide policies and standards to design, fund, and construct wildlife crossing infrastructure, many crossings have been constructed in an ad-hoc manner. This reality fosters an unclear pathway to the successful implementation of crossing projects.
